right click -> properties not working!

OS: Windows XP Pro SP1 (legal copy)

in windows explorer, if i right-click and select properties for a folder/directory, the properties window doesnt appear. only the explorer window goes out of focus.

the properties window does appear for individual files tho.

i've also tried 'alt+enter' and 'file->properties'
both have produced no results.

i've noticed such behaviour mostly after i've dragged and dropped files from a CD to the harddrive. maynot be the only case tho

this weird behaviour is annoying me!!!

So, it doesn't occur when the OS is freshly restarted? Only after some thing like dragand drop from a CD?

Weird.

Cheers
Mick

this is how i discovered/noticed this behaviour

i dragged and dropped a bucketfull of mp3s from a CD
wanted to deselect the 'Read-Only' property of the folders
mentioned behaviour happened

hence i created a new folder myself and dragged and dropped individual files. same deal.

restarted PC, behaviour vanished. was able to reach 'properties' and deselect read-only

forgot about it

thing happened again today!!

so not really sure if fresh restart is relevant ..
will remember to check that when i restart again

well, i just restarted and tried...same behaviour, no properties window!

here's what i load during system startup
seti@home
zonealarm
DU Meter

another funny thing i've noticed is NAV's 'File System Realtime Protection' gets disabled when after system startup. and then gets enabled again after a while

also IIS and 'CBA--Message System'(?) has been trying to connect to the internet at system startup. i have refused to let them connect.

i ran adaware, have spyblaster installed, did a virus check, all with latest updates.

is something loading at startup that shouldnt be loading? or i can do without?

When NAV loads, it will be disabled for a period as it loads - that is normal.

If it loads first, you barely see it, if at all... if it loads during another serious piece of software, or in the middle of a load, or on a SLOW machine, it takes a while (try it on a K6-2 350 - its disabled for a good 30 seconds )
