i made a stupid move

ok i was in my room and the sound card did not work and i had my case off the computer and i saw that the card was coming out a little and the computer was on and i push the card in the slot and then my computer almost turned off so i unplugged it and then i turn it back on and now the computer will turn on and all but the computer will not shut down so what is the problem i think i mested up my hard drive i just bought about 2 months ago

I'm not totally clear on your problem. Are you saying that the computer will turn on and boot fine... it just won't turn off?

If it will load the OS (btw what OS are you using) try running scandisk to correct any errors on your HD caused by the improper shutdown.

try turnin it off at the power supply, resetin it ,wait a min and start it again

little lesson for ya. dont EVER remove or add components in a pc when its powered on. i dont think you fried your drive, but doing what you did could fry the system board or power supply in a snap. as far as powering off, try removing any pci/ISA cards and see if one of them is hanging the system. you might have a problem now with the power supply. if you ask me, you're lucky it still fires up.

ok yeah it will turn on and but it will not turn off i am running windows 98 se i allready tried running the scandisk i tried restaring and all

Try shutting it down (however you can).

Once it's off, then pull the power connector from the mobo. Let it sit about 10 secs. then plug it back in.

Try starting it up and shutting it down normal.

ok i took out the modem sound card and usb card and took my fan out to and i unplugged my power supply for 10 secs and it still does not shut down what next guys

When you try to shutdown, exactly what does it do? Does it go part way and then hang? 98 was notorious for a shutdown problem to the point that MS issued a patch just for this problem.

I would try shutting down your machine however you can and then letting it sit unplugged from the wall for awhile to let any residual charge in components, capacitators etc. discharge. How long? Be extreme and give it a 1/2 hour to be sure. Then plug it back in and try it. Run scandisk again. Good luck
