how hot is too hot?

I was just wondering how hot a proc. can be before it becomes dangerous. I have a p4, which hits around 49C at a full load; I'd like to bump up the FSB just a bit, but was wondering if I should leave it.

P4 2.4C

p4 should go higher than that without damage but it might become unstable - what kinda heatsink/term paste you using?

For a P4 that is a bit hot, I would understand those temps under an Athlon CPU, but I would be very wary about boosting the FSB with those temps.
General rule of thumb, that I would say is that any proc that goes to the area of 60 C is considered to be very bad, and something to cool it should be done imaditately. Also at those temps the system becomes unstable.

Thats not hot at all---dont worry it will throttle itself back and keep from harming itself--- even if your heatsink falls off---
2.4c will hit 3k+/- with the stock heatsink with no drama...

I got to side with TKOP. thats not too hot at all....especially if that temp is your full load condition. you could take that P4 up near 60C if you wanted with no harm. I am personally a AMD buff but really, any PC CPU on the market right now can run at 60C with stock heat sinks wether it be a Intel, VIA or AMD chip(chips I've personnally run hotter). My current AMD XP2100+ is idle at around 44-45C and full load runs at about 59-60C. I have seen an AMD chip run at 74C stable and a VIA C3 chip run at 76C stable although I myself wouldn't allow those conditions....no need to press your luck...heh

When i was "tuning: my voltage mod i accidently slipped and cranked up the voltage to 2.4volts, As i was monitoring the temp in the bios i saw my chip get up to 84deg!! In short i wouldnt worry to much about anything below 60. Personally i run mine in the range of 50-65 deg depending of the voltage im putting through it and the overclock.

(its an amd 2100b)

Okay, thanks guys, I feel a bit better

Now if only I can OC this thing and get my RAM to do the same without having to resort to a 5:4....
