Load OS into RAM

so I was wondering what happens if I load all the core OS files in the RAM?

I mean I was checking out Tweak-XP Pro and it has this option to load the OS into the RAM.
I have 1 GB, and what benefits should I see from doing this.

why would you do that for? i'm curious...

you wouldn't have any ram left for running it... and programs.

When using 1gb or more of RAM, Windows will load all the data it thinks you'll use most...which includes a lot of the stuff it uses.

well. everything loaded into the ram would start up and i think run crazy fast.

it is the ram drive idea i think. there was a little prog i remember having but dosn't work on anything higher then 98 but it would give you a drive out of your ram. downside is you would lose all the stuff on it durring a reboot.

but for windows doing it itself i think windows would get alot faster for windows use.

yeah, I think that is the drive ram thingy.

I haven`t tried it cause I some important data I can`t loose so I can`t mess up anything.

Though, BobOmega, what do you mnea that I`ll loose all the stuff during a reboot?
I mean If I write say a paper and save it....I`ll loose it? I`m not getting it right...correct?

I think it could only be used to load core system files, which load on startup....

so they will load every time u restart.

as far as saving document or any other file to the memory, mmm that's not safe.

see, (i think) everytime you restart the computer, anything that was loaded into the RAM gets erased.

Sounds like Knoppix .......

It uses the ram and cdrom drive......... no hard drive access at all. You do have the option of writing to the hard drive if you need to.

Not sure how the windows thing works..........but if you wanted to experiment with new stuff and didn't need the hard drive to run this then one benifit is you can't screw anything up if it doesn't write to the hard drive.

ram dies (loses its values) when the power is turned off

so loading anything into ram and running it from there is fine just make sure its saved back to your hard disk before you reboot or shut down

however most programs (including windows) load whatever files they are using into memory anyway so you may not see much benifit manually loading them
