How do I burn a DVD?

I would like to know if it is even possible to burn a .avi or any other format video file on to a DVD-R. I have nero 5.5 and it won't let me. If so how do I do this, do I need DVD copy software? I would also like to know how to burn a regular DVD onto a DVD-R or DVD-RW.

Nero can burn DVDs. What drive do you have? Give all details of your system, software and so on.
