virtual memory message

When I shut down computer I now sometimes get a message saying-->"your system is low on virtual memory, windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file".

I never had this happen b4, and this message is getting annoying..lol

I went to system properties, and cliked on advance tab and then performance to increase virtual memory. (changed from 384 to 400) However I still get that annoying message when i shut down. Im not sure what is a good initial size to begin with since Ive never had to do this.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

gigabyte ga-7vax mobo
wd 60gb hdd
256 ddr memory
windows xp pro

Well this is a good place to start reading about virtual memory, straight from Micro$oft. Don't be afraid to bump it up a bit more!

If you want another take on VM, read more here.

I would recommend maybe 256mb minumum, and setting up the max to maybe 512mb.
As you wouldn't likely use all that, but if windows xp decides to give this error message when shutting down it wouldn't happen. When loading up windows and without loading any extra programs, how much is being used? (you can check in task manager, windows xp usually takes 128mb for itself as you have a decent ammount.
You could probably do with out some of the things you might have in task bar that are loaded up as they can quickly become a problem with hogging up the memory, tho i can easily get away with stuff like this. But with a smaller ammount of memory this can be causing you problem with the virtual memory.
You can use reg cleaner and remove a few programs that start up with windows to help alleviate this. Tho not reccomended that you remove something at start up if you don't know what it is, so be careful.
