Generic Installer Error

! Message SU99405

After formatting and installing win98se on an old gateway 266mhz unit, I added some ram and replaced the floppy drive and replaced the cdrom with a cd-rw drive. While installing the roxio creator 5, the system rebooted. Since then, windows would start and after a few seconds on the desktop(mouse and all working), the system would reboot. Decided to reinstall windows. Now I get the message: Generic Installer Error - ! Message SU99405 - UpdateInis=processing error. (0x195) Could not find it at microsoft site.

Any suggestion may help.

By the way, I'm new here but I have referenced the forums for months for other info.

Take a look at your setuplog.txt file. It might tell you what process isn't working. The generic error is just that - it doesn't give any specific information.
I strongly suspect the Roxio software, unless you wiped your HDD before reinstalling Win98

Trying updating your Windows Installer. I had problems with upgrading a Win98 machine to Win98 SE. I installed the Windows Installer update and everything was fine from then on. Was also having problems with Windows Updates not installing either.
