Help with my Gigabyte 7VAXP and AMD 2500+

I am new to TIMO and I need help.

I am a computer guy by trade. Worked for the Govt. for 25+ years in programming and tech support. I say this not because I am posting a resume but because I have a strange problem. Tossed a bunch of $ at it and now I wonder if something isn't burnt up!

Here is my story. I have an AMD 1900+. The power supply died. I thought time for an upgrade. Bought a new 2500+, a 7VAXP mobo, and a new case. Moved my memory, disks, and video from the old case and thought I was good to go. Turned it on. The power supply came on for about 1 second and squeaked. And the power shut off. I took out the 2500+ and put my 1900+ on the mobo. Turned it on. Got a squeak. No fans moved. Power shut off again. Did research. Several tech support places said my 300w power supply is too puny you new 430w. Bought an Antec true power 430w. Turned it on. Fans started. Ran about 3 seconds and shut off. Put my 1900+ in. Same thing.

I have an Abit 440MX video card. The 7VAXP is a KT400 chip set with an AGP 8x slot. Wrote to the Abit forum. The forum leader said no problem. The MX 440 will run at 1.5 volts in an 4x or 8x slot. I mention this because the 7VAXP book says the mobo may fry with a 3.3v video card.

So I am stuck. Did something fry when I had the 300w power supply? Is the mobo just DOA.

Oh yeah the comment about being burnt. I turned it on with no video card at all just to see if I would get beeps instead the power supply kept on running but it started smell like it was burning! And I saw a little smoke! yikes!

My suspicion is that I need an 8x card and Abit is wrong but after tossing $375 dollars at this fiasco so far I wonder if spending another $75 for an AGP 8x card isn't just a waste of money.

Any comments will be appreciated.

Thanks

Dan Maday

I have the same board but have never had that kind of a problem. Make sure nothing is shoted out. Try switching the single blue dipswitch to 100 rather than auto (under clock your CPU while trouble shooting) Try unpluging your HDD just to be safe. Reseat eavery thing. And if all else fails RMA the board. Hope you purchased from newegg.com. If not do so in the future. One of the best resalers online.

Oh what kind of ram do you have? Some ram may not work if you used older ran from your last system. It would be worth spending 60 dollars on a stick of 512mb pc 2700 kingston value ram. I have two sticks in my system and it runs wounderfully.

Sounds like a short to me. Check your motherboard and make sure you aren't making contact anywhere

VaTech might be wright on this one.
But first I would sugest that you take out the CPU, unplug your HDD from power and from the motherboard, take out your RAM, and any PCI cards. Make sure that the only thing pluged in is power to your mobo, the powers switch and the PC speaker.
If you turn on your system this way it should give you a series of beeps. If you got none than your mobo is gone. If you have some, start puting things in one at a time starting with CPU, untill you get the same problem, and you will know what is casing it.

As to your 300 not being enought, that is BS. A 300W PS should be fine to run most systems out there (well not the one that have 7 fans in them), but if you got 2 fans, 2 optical, a HDD you should be fine with a 300, I would go with a 350 for extra safty. Its not really the capacity but how stable it is.

As to the posiblity of a short. Here is another thing you can check. The gigabyt boards do not fully follow the ATX mounting standard. If you are facing the board 5 of the 6 screws used to mount and secure the mobo follow the standard, but the middle one on the right side of the borad (one facing the front of the case) is recesed into the middle where most cases do not have a stand off. Gigabyte did provide some sort of protection there I guess so that shorting does not happen, but that would be the first thing I check.
Also have you taken out the mobo and tryed to runing out of case. If it works you know what the problems is, and where to start looking.

Finaly you can check your PS, to make sure its running fine by shorting two pins on the connector that goes into the mobo (I forgot which ones). It will then turn on, just make sure you pluges a fan or two into it so you have some load, and start testing all the molex connectors and see if you are getting either 5 or 12 volts.
I know this is not the best solution, but atleast you will know that your PS is working fine.

I wonder if the motherboard is shorting out against the chassis? I think that I would return that motherboard for a replacement considering the smoke and all, something about this seems really bad.
