Talk Maxtor RMA gets an A++

Built a system for my brother a few months ago. The weekend before the 4th his new Maxtor Diamond Max Plus9 ATA133 drive failed, catasrophic-like, even.

Well, I got the drive out on Tuesday, went to Maxtor's site for an RMA request, and got it done cross-ship style

This morning the new drive arrived

Here's the kicker:

Date of Manufacture 23JUN2003

Now that's true class, a brand spankin' new drive! Not a refurb.

I have the RMA process for Maxtor down-pat. I have RMA'd 20GB drives 5 times (mind you I had 3 20GB drives and 5 RMAs) and I RMA'd 60GB drives 4 times (I have 2 60GB drives and each has been back twice). All of these were catastrophic failures, aka click-of-death.

Their drives might be junk (IMO), but they have a great RMA process!

(comparison: I have had 4 WD 20GB drives and a 13GB and 3 WD 40GB drives and only RMA'd one that died 1 week before the 3 year warranty was up)

I don';t think their drives are junk at all... eventhough i'm RMA'ing 1 drive...

this is the first time i've ever had a problem with a maxtor drive..

and guess what?

It died because i dropped it, and it made loud noises, and the BIOS wouldn't even recognize it.

========================================

I would choose maxtor over any other manufaturer.

I prefer Maxtor or Western Digital for my hard drives. This is the first Maxtor failure that I've had in a customer's computer, luckily it was my brother's computer and not a paying customer's.

He's OK with the failure, "S#$(& happens!" was his response when I told him the HD crapped out. The only thing he didn't like was having to reinstall all his games

I've RMAed 2 Maxtor drives. One was a damaged 10GB one, the other was a damaged 10GB Maxtor sent me. Go figure

Had a 20 gb Maxtor last 6 months in my daughters pc, it went south. However the RMA process was farly quick and painless and the new one has lasted about 2 years I think.

I've found the Maxtor and Western Digital RMA policies to be about the same, and I'm happy with both of them.

I've had to RMA my WD400BB twice, and the only other drives I've had to RMA of theirs were a 5GB and a 60GB.

The only other real option is to get SCSI drives. I like Maxtor's RMA policy myself - you get the drive back quick. Now I've only got one WD and its an 80GB special edition. I think I'll cry if that on goes south though.. it's fast and quiet.
