CDRW/DVD Combo does not go all the way

I recently purchased an internal CDRW/DVD Combo drive for my IBM T21 Laptop with W2K Pro. Its an Matshita UJDA730 Firmware Version 1004. The drive is installed on the secondary IDE Channel as Master.
System ASPI drivers are V4.60 although I tried it with 4.71 too.

After installing the drive I quickly discovered that the drive acts extremly weird:
. It plays Audio CD only till about track 10-12, which is about 60%, after that it either skips or hangs up. I tried this with several CD's and various audio players, the result is always the same.
. It can burn CD-R and CDRW but only till about 350MB, if I try to burn larger files it hangs too! I did this using Nero 5.5. and Roxio Easy CD Creator 5, both with the same result.
. Although it recognizes DVD, it refuses to play them (region code of the dvd matches the one of the drive).

I do have a second drive (DVD only) and all CD's and DVD play nicely with this one.

I purchased a cleaning CD, but this did not change anything too.

Has anyone a clue what else I could do? I'm lost!

Welcome to TechIMO.
Sounds like it's a hardware issue, not software.
Possably the drive needs to be RMA'd for a new one.

Hi WB, yes, indeed, this was what I thought first too. But sorry, I forgot one important thing:
Before I received this drive, I had a SD-R2002 from Toshiba. The drive showed the same behaviour and I therefore complaint with
the seller who exchanged it to the UJDA730.
Since both drives performe the same, I doubt that it is a HW problem.
