BEFSX41 problems!

I just got a 768/128 DSL connection about a week ago, everything seemed to work great. I just received my Linksys BEFSX41 router and tried installing it.

The first problem I encountered was that I couldnt get an internet connection through the router and thus coudlnt continue with the CD installation.

I connected to the router manually through the browser, set my connection type to PPPoE, put in my username/password and connected. The internet connected but its extremely slow. It wont even run the bandwidthspace.com speedtest, it hangs on the image download. I tried a live stream connection test at numion.com and it starts out around 150kbps then crawls down to around 20-30kbps. Also when I try to donwload a file it will start and then just freeze. Before the router I could donwload around 80k/sec and tested speeds around 300-400kbps

I checked for the latest firmware on the linksys website but it was dated at Nov/2002, my router configuation shows December/2002, outdated webpage?

After calling linksys tech support they had me change the MTU settings around but it didnt fix the problem. I also tried disabling the advanced firewall settings with no avail.

I cut and pasted this below from the manual for your router. I don't use that particular one but thought it may apply to your situation.

10. I am a PPPoE user, and I need to remove the proxy settings or the dial-up popup window.

If you have proxy settings, you need to disable these on your computer.
Because the Router is the gateway for the Internet connection, the computer
does not need any proxy settings to gain access. Please follow these directions
to verify that you do not have any proxy settings and that the browser you use
is set to connect directly to the LAN.
For Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher:
A. Click Start, Settings, and Control Panel. Double-click Internet Options.
B. Click the Connections tab.
C. Click the LAN settings button and remove anything that is checked.
D. Click the OK button to go back to the previous screen.
E. Click the option Never dial a connection. This will remove any dial-up
pop-ups for PPPoE users.
For Netscape 4.7 or higher:
A. Start Netscape Navigator, and click Edit, Preferences, Advanced, and
Proxies.
B. Make sure you have Direct connection to the Internet selected on this
screen.
C. Close all the windows to finish.

It was already configured that way b4, didnt even have to change it, but thx for trying

I did a bunch of surfing around the web and apparently the router has alot of firmware problems, but a fixed version hasnt been released by linksys, other than a beta, 1.44.11t that I havent been able to find the donwload for.

I bought the router at newegg, havent had to deal with their customer service b4 but I hear its good. Would they allow me to exchange for a different item and refund the difference? I was thinking I might just go wit the BEFSR41 which seems to be less problematic

Thats the one I use and never had any problems. I would think newegg would be able to work with you on a return/swap. You may need to get an RMA number before you can return it. Never got anything from them so I'm not sure of their policies.

What version of firmware do you have?

Although I'm not sure I think my modem has some sort of built in NAT firewall, as does the router.

Since it does work... just not very well at all Im assuming its not a product defect in the router but who knows. Linksys couldnt seem to figure out anything over the phone. Basically linksys told me to call my ISP and my ISP told me to call Linksys so I really cant get anywhere

Efficient Networks Speedstream 5200 (given to me by my ISP, www.netsync.net) The ISP is from netsync but it goes through Alltel)
Apparently it has 2 modes, bridge or router depending on what firmware is loaded into it (the modem). Right now it just acts as a bridge so it has be kind of puzzled why there would be a firewall confict but its all i can think of

The router came with 1.44.3, dated december, 2002 (dont remember the day). After screwing around trying to get it to work for about 5 hours I unhooked it so I could get a decent connection and went to the linksys site, the latest they had there was dated November, 2002, so as kind of a last resort i updated (Downgraded actualy) but it still has the same problems.

So that modem has a dhcp server for single client support. So it gets assigned an IP from your ISP, it then assigns your linksys router this ip: 192.168.254.254, and then if you have DHCP enabled on the linksys router it assigns 192.168.1.100 to you pc. Both the Linksys and your modem are using NAT. I'm not exactly sure if that will cause the problem you are having. Is this what is happening? When you got to the Linksys routers setup what do you see for the WAN IP address?
