will a 266 FSB cpu run with pc100 SDRAM?

hey, i have this mobo that i was looking to build a system around. now it supports both 200 and 266 fsb. now if i buy pc 100 sdram, will it be able to run 266 fsb cpu's? im assuming not but i was not totally sure about this.

thanx.

Of course they can. The FSB and memory clock are not synchronized together (they don't have to run at the same speed for the system to work). You can certainly run your CPU at 133MHz and your memory at 100MHz.

Where people sometimes get concerned is when you run your memory HIGHER than your FSB. At this point (although it STILL works fine), many believe you get a bottleneck in performance. However, that is not the case here

Cheers

While you can do it, I don't understand why you would want to keep your old memory, unless cost is a focal issue in your system build. PC133 can be had fairly cheap nowadays and will give you a healthy jump in performance over PC100 RAM. Think of it as putting an UDMA-33 harddrive in your system when your motherboard will support the newer ATA-100 drives.

wait, many mobos do synchronize the speed
and with pc100 the xp will run at lower speed

If your motherboard has a BIOS that forces the two to run at the same speed, I would seriously consider a BIOS Flash. Many manufacturers only allow certain combinations (e.g. the K7S5A can be run at 100/100, 100/133, or 133/133 only).

I don't refute that there may be a manufacturer who does this (although I've never seen it), but I would still seriously recommend a new BIOS version...that's just crazy

well most boards Ive seen have this speed matching integrated and it makes sense as well
