Little more details might help. I guess im kinda confused what the problem is.

By looked like crap do you mean its all pixelated? Or is it just blurry and crappy quality.

What bitrate are you encoding at?
What version of DIVX codec is it?
What program are you using to actual encode with?
Are you viewing it on your computer, or are you putting it on a DVD and putting it on a player?

I guess it sorta depends what exactly you're copying. My personal fav however is VirtualDub, its a free program. Dont have a link off hand but if I can find one ill post it.

1) Open up your source file (movie you want to encode with DIVX).
2) Video --> Compression
3) Select DIVX (version number)
4) goto "Configure" to setup the bit rate
5) Audiio --> compression, pick an audio codec, I norm just use mpeg-layer III audio
6) File -- > Save as AVI

I should note that if you're trying to RIP a DVD then you'll need different software. DVDx works great for me, very user friendly, and its free (older version). The newer one is called DVDxCopy and costs money.

It has settings so that you just tell it what format you want to encode with (AVI, Mpeg-1, Mpeg-2), lets you select a codec, then you just select how big you want the resultant file (around 700MB gives you pretty good quality with DIVX), and it does the rest for you.

I got DVDx too and when I go to open the file it says ASPI is not avaable. And without it you cant open a file over 2gb.
