What the heck?!?!? A double whammy!! HELP!!

Ok, here it goes. My processor (2.8GHz 800MHz fsb) was running hot. Intel said it was fne for short term and would send another fan and heatsink. Today, I smell something burning, and just like tha, my screen goes blank. I open the case, take off the heatsink and fan, and find a portion of my processor has melted onto th bottom of the heatsink. Also, it tookout my motherboard, and melted the processor lock handle thing. I am caling for replaceent tomorrow. I am so pissed. Both cost meover $450. I NEED my comp up and running (Me and a friend do webdesign for companies. Is it common for a dead cpu to take the mobo with it? Thanks.

More likely the mobo took out the cpu. Sounds like a bad short somewhere.

Bad Intel...
I'm going to bookmark this so I have it next time someone says AMD's run too hot.

That is bad news. I haven't used intel since the P3 era, I had a 1Ghz, I haven't gone back since, and don't think I will!

It is common for both to go out at the same time when suffering from severe heat, i.e. enough to weld your cpu to your HS. I've never heard of a cpu getting that hot while the HS was on it though. My guess is that your cpu took out your mobo. I had a 1 GHz T-bird I moved around from my machine to my families and it has survived 2 mobo burnouts but I've known many people who lost both cpu and mobo. For me it was always obvious that it was the motherboard b/c it took the ram w/ it. I do some web design too and I can't imagine how far behind I would be w/o my computer for a couple days. I wish you the best of luck in getting your system back asap.

The HSF could have been seated incorrectly, causing a slight gap between the CPU and itself.
