Kids What are IDX files...

...and why are there 1284 of them on my storage drive?!?

Yeah, they're only 1kb each, but what are they for and can I get rid of them?

What program is creating them?

They are created by database engines and programs like Outlook to allow for fast searches. Some common databases include those created by Access, music playlists, Fox Pro, some anti virus programs and so on.

I don't know if its OK to delete them. I have only 5.

Thanks shahani, that helps point me in the right direction. I think I will send them all to the recycle bin and see if I get any errors.

I forgot to mention that I'm running WinXP Pro SP1, OfficeXP Pro, Winamp3, and for antivirus I'm using AVG from Grisoft.

Also, it seems that they are all being generated by one program, because they are named in sequential alpha-hex numbers, from CA00.IDX to STff.IDX (first two digits alphabetic, last two in hex).

Do a search for *.idx to see where they are but I also use AVG and it has one idx file.

Found the idx file for AVG, it's in the AVG folder. These are in the root of my D:\ drive.

They're in the RC now

I think idx are index files for the applications. I found two sets on mine, one for AVG and other for my lyrics database.
