Scandisk on Every Boot???
Got a curious problem here. I had a machine whose northbridge went byebye, so I cannibalized it. A couple of the drives and RAM went into a new machine.
The new machine was built on one of those PCChips-type, SiS chipset all-in-one mobos. I didn't bother formatting the drive or anything, as this is primarily a UD crunching cow.
The previous machine had it's issues, primarily due to the blown chipset. Once I got the drivers for the motherboard in on this one, it seems to be running just fine. BUT.....
Right from the git-go, as soon as I bolted it together and fired it up just to see if anything smoked, when Winderz loaded, it would demand to do a thorough Scandisk. I let it do it once, just because, but even after all the setup stuff, cleaning out old drivers etc., it still insists on running Scandisk at every boot.
The OS is Win98 SE. It seems to me I've seen somewhere, at one time or another, a checkbox that would make Windows do this, although I'm sure I didn't check it.
Anybody got a clue as to how to stop this behaviour, short of a wipe and rebuild?

If memory serves me right, 98 se will insists on doing a scandisk everytime you boot, unless you let it scandisk every drive to its fullest fixing all the errors it has cought.
If you have done that, and it still does it, it might mean two things:
scandisk is not unchecking the flag that makes it load everytime
there indeed is that checkbox somewhere that forces scandisk to run everytime win boots.
I should have asked this before but is it running the DOS, scandisk, or Windows?
If windows than mostlikely the second posibility, if DOS than first.

It's the DOS scandisk. I have let it run the usual standard-issue scan, but bailed out of the complete surface scan part. I'll give that a go.
But that's what's driving me nuts, is where that flag is to uncheck it.

Well, I let it run its full course and it then quit the behaviour. Never did find the checkbox, but I suspect it's somewhere in TweakUI which isn't on this machine. I'll have to look around.
Thanks!

Isn't it in MSCONFIG.EXE?
ADVANCED Button,
tick "disable scandisk after bad shutdown"

Out, sure enough, there it is, I gotta go check that machine. It's fine now, but....
Also, there's some stuff in TweakUI where you can set some options as well.
