Outdoors SOLDIERS NEED QUICK DVD-/+RW SUGGESTIONS?

http://www.techimo.com/forum/showthr...threadid=69900

http://www.techimo.com/forum/showthr...threadid=69982

You can read the above to find the pain in the @#$ I have gone through just trying to get some movies to play..Even movies that haven't been burnt are giving me trouble. (Most recently StarTrek Nemesis)

Ok, so I've given up on trying to fix this piece of junk, and decided I'll buy whatever it takes to get this working. Any suggestions on what the best DVD -/+ RW type combination is? I just want to be able to play the movies I have, so I'm looking for something that can read basically everything.Writing anything would be a nice plus as well.
This piece of junk computer is the only access we have to watch movies here in Iraq, so I need to get it fixed as soon as possible.
PLEASE HELP!

I'm not 100% sure I understand the question, as I'm a little thick. You're looking for the most compatible format as in -R or +R? If that's the case, everyone I talk to says -R. I have a +R in my computer and it works fine, though. Or are you looking for a certain barand, or what? And where do you get a dvd burner in Iraq? Circuit City? Or does someone ship it to you? Where are you stationed and with what branch and in what capacity?

First off, thanks for the reply. As I understand it, and I might be wrong, a lot of the Dual Type RW's (- and +) have trouble reading the actual CD's themselves. The same problem I am having now is what I want to avoid in the future. (The inability to detect a CD or DVD in the drive) I am looking for a +/- writer also so that I do not run into having the Beta version of the DVD's in the future.
But I am open to suggestion as I dont know a whole lot about the details of the DVD R's
As for how I can get it in Iraq, I am in the army and one of my additional duties is purchasing supplies, some mail is coming through to the soldiers but they have to be small packages.

Good Morning Sarge!

I've heard that a couple of the Sony DVDRW's are dual and work well on +/-, but I'm not up on which ones.

Similar to your problem, but may be related is my old Phillips DVD player is now refusing to play some of the newer DVD's. MIBII refuses to play and says it is a Region Code problem. Yet the DVD is a Region 1 and the player is locked on Region 1. The same DVD has no problem on the other 4 players in the house, only the one.

BTW, I use CyberLink's Power DVD Player.

Good Morning
Nice Pic sharder, I see that logo a lot But yes, over the past few weeks I have discovered that this is a problem becoming more widespread. I have watched my DVD's work on other computers that 1. had region 1 locked hardware AND software and 2. using the same programs I have on my computer.
I have downloaded every and any player (about 12 total) I could find and still nothing.
I have upgraded and downgraded firmware.
And I have installed every Decoder and codec I could find! Which is why I cant understand it.
I have even used region free software and firmware to make mine region free. All while another guy spent $300 less than I did on his computer at the same time I did, And thay all play fine on his! (Programs show that both drives are capable of reading the same things)
I have studied it for a week and have absolutely no clue as to what would cause it.
I just figure if I'm gonna spend the cash and buy something newer, I want to make sure it reads everything I need it to.

Yeah after reading your threads I was puzzled at how the combo drives were not reading DVD+R/RW. Did a little searching and EVERY combo drive I found did not list DVD+R/RW as a valid read type.

This I think you've found out is your problem (the big one anyway as the other problems should be overcome with software)

So my question, are you looking to replace with a regular DVDRom drive, or are you now looking to buy a DVDBurner???

You might want to look into the Sony DRU 510A(X). I have the 500A(X) but with the firmware update it is the same as the 510A. (The X just means it comes with more software.)The 510 can write at 4x while the 500 is at 2.4X. It is a DVD+-/rw. I have had no problems watching any DVD movies on it though it is a bit pricey at $310-350.

Hope this helps.
