Outdoors Postfix can recieve all accounts accept one!!

Moring all

This is my first post so pleased to be here. And I hope I can help you as you may be able to help me.

I have setup a email server with redhat 9 and I am using postfix as the email server.

I have setup about 30 accounts for email and they all work fine accept one account which is an account called sales.

I have tried to remove everything to do with this account using
userdel -r sales
Ive then checked to make sure that the mail file has been removed and thatl the files associated with the account have been updated accordingly which they have.
/etc/passwd
/etc/shadow
/etc/group

I then re add the account as I would any other account and still it will not recieve emails, but i can still ssh into the account and send from it.

does nay body have any ideas on how I could resolve this problem or what could be causeing it

Thanks
me here to everyone there

Welcome to techimo.

In what way can it not receive mail? Does the mail bounce, get stuck in a queue or vanish of into the ether? Any errors generated (I would check dmesg, messages and the postfix log)?

Regards

eddy

Hello

The mail doesnt bounce back and there are no apparent errors. in dmesg and im not sure what the postfix log spat out at me, but im not sure how im supposed to use that.

the mail doesnt get stuck in the queue it just seems to vanish.

eg

#
mail sales
subject: blah
blah
.
cc:
#

for all the other accounts this works fine and the test message will be sent and can then be picked up with a email client.

however with sales it vanishes

do you know of a way to trace what postfix maybe doing with the message ?

thanks :-) for a friendly welcome

You should be able to trace whats going on through the mail log file, probably something like /var/log/mail. It should show each stage of the mail transfer process and with a bit of luck give you an idea of where its breaking.

Jul 4 16:24:25 bob postfix/local[4997]: 8F012164209: to=<postfix@bob.hopperslocal>, relay=local, delay=0, status=sent (mailbox)

this is the error I find in /var/log/maillog when I send to sales the rest is normal

Misc

aha

I found the problem, I installed webmin and I looked throught the postfix setup and I saw that sales by default is aliased to the postfix account.

A very annoying but simple problem to solve . . . once you know about it!!

cheers for everyones help, it made me pursue every avenue and helped me learn some new things about postfix

from me here to everyone there

Nice work, good to know you got it sorted. Thanks for letting us know what the issue was (allways interesting to see the solution to a problem).
