wide ultra scsi 3 question

i just got a few 9.1 gig "wide-ultra scsi-3 drives " . they were pulled from a server i guess . they are in "plugable" racks ?

well i want to pull them out and use them but i have never messed with scsi before . can someone tell me what a good but cheap controler card is good to get so i can use them or atleast see if they work ?

thanks .

If you want performance, go with an LSI U160 adapter. Whitebox kit w/ cable and termination is $89 at hypermicro.

You'll need SCA to 68 pin adapters as well. The adapters should run around 10.00 per drive.

Don't jump on cheap offers that don't include cable and termination. An U160 cable w/ termination is easily going to be more than $30 when bought separately.

And yes, these SCSI hosts are backward compatible. From U2W aka U80 to U320, all drive speeds can be mixed and matched; if you add a device that's UW or slower, the entire bus (including all devices that COULD go faster) drops back to UW speed, and then again you can mix and match from UW (40 MB/s) down to original 1st generation SCSI at 5 MB/s or even lower. The cable and termination packed in by hypermicro also support that fallback.

Those pluggable racks surely include 80-pin "SCA" drives, but should have standard 68-pin wiring on their backs where the internal cabling goes. Else you'll need 80-to-68 adapters as RicheemxX said.

regards,
Peter

umm ok the racks do have a pcb board that plugs into the drive but it goes to a slot type connector . not a plug per say . if you want a pick i can post one . they are 9.1 gig , the drives , but only 7200 rpm i think . how about this one . it says retail so does that mean it will come with cables .

I just picked up the same thing Omar, except I also was able to pull the RAID controller from the server also. All I had to do to get it running was plug in the RAID card into a PCI slot. There is software on HP's website(array configuration utility)to configure it.

I have another one of those cards if your interested. It is a compaq smart array 2dh.
