yes another silly networking ??

I'm not quite getting this. I'm trying to use ICS or setup a router with dial-up and can't get it done is it even possible. I'm more than a lil new to setting up networking so make it simple please.

Here's the set-up both comps have win98se
I'm trying to use comp one as the host/main computer and basically allow comp two to connect transer files ect.
comp one uses onboard nic and a 56k v92 best data modem
comp 2 has generic nic installed. I have a SMC7004VBR router wich i can't seem to get set-up because I'm only using dial-up at the moment. Is this setup even possible to do?

and no I don't have a crossover cable I wanted to try to use the router as a switch but I'm thinking its not working that way.
any suggestion would be great.

EDIT: after d/l'ing and skimming the complete maual I see this might not be paossible...but I'm still not sure

It's possible. You won't be connecting to the internet from the router but it should still connect through the machine with the modem

Are you able to share files between the two?

Comp 2 won't show in my network however I'm not sure I have it setup right. I have printer a file sharing enabled on both and networking setup seems to be fine on both ICS was on comp one and seemed to be setup fine but neither one can spot the other. the router won't setup due to the fact it can't access the internet through a dsl/cable connection. But even without that setup it should still allow for switching right??

Heck I might have it all screwy by the time i get done

They're on the same workgroup, right?

I think the only thing you'd need to setup for a router anyway would be internet stuff.

try going to http://192.168.0.1/ or http://192.168.1.1/ in a browser to see if you can setup the router

That's why I put my 12 year old son in charge of setting up things on the box. If it goes bad, it's not my fault.
