GTA VICE CITY SOUND PROBLEM

I got the built-in c-media 8738 chipset that came with my asus

p4s533-e (DirectX compliant) and when I launch gta vice city the

game doesn't detect sound hardware, whereas gta 3 did so. I

have directX 9 installed and dxdiag does not show any sound

problems. Do I have to purchase an additional sound card? Aren't

on-board sound cards compatible with this game?

thanks.

on-boards aren't that good but i'd buy a new soundcard, but u can check a fewthings, like the volume in the game and then try to see in dxdiag go to sounds tab and either accelerate it to the maximum or bring it to the lowest, this had helped others with this problem

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game? Does the sound work fine otherwise (i.e. in windows)? If sound is only affected in the one game, then it's probably a bad sound setting in the game. Check to make sure the settings are all set to something the integrated audio can handle. Try disabling environmental effects if they are enabled, and make sure the game is using DirectSound (or whatever).

You don't need to purchase an additional sound card if everything else is working sound-wise. You may want to check to see if newer audio drivers are available for your motherboard, though.

reinstalled but still didn't work

i reinstalled vice city and deleted the save game files, but it did not solve the problem. if i want to hear any of the effects, i have to turn the music down almost all the way. i need to know any thing that you think might work to solve this problem. thank you for your help.
