Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game? Does the sound work fine otherwise (i.e. in windows)? If sound is only affected in the one game, then it's probably a bad sound setting in the game. Check to make sure the settings are all set to something the integrated audio can handle. Try disabling environmental effects if they are enabled, and make sure the game is using DirectSound (or whatever).
You don't need to purchase an additional sound card if everything else is working sound-wise. You may want to check to see if newer audio drivers are available for your motherboard, though.
