Linksys BEFSR41 trouble

Got this used router cheap, now maybe I'm finding out why. It powers up, then the red diagnostic light comes on and thats all. Trying to hook it up on my network to gain some ports.Got cows to feed you know. Upstream is my netgear router. Pushed the reset button, same thing. What do I need to do?

Send a message via ICQ to Wizzard~Of~Ozz
Sounds like a firmware upgrade went bad, I'ld check Linksys's site for how/if you can recover from a bad update of the firmware.

Can you elaborate more on your lan? Does the lan side work? Where exactly is the netgear router and why do you need it?

Here is their download site. Maybe the firmware update will help you.

I have broadband isp. Cable comes into themodem, the network cable is plugged into a 4 port Netgear Router DI704, then I have it split off to two pcs upstairs ,each on their own network cables. Downstairs here I have it running to 2 pcs, each on their own cables. I got the Linksys to split off one side down here so I can add more pcs on one cable , I'm out of ports . I did have a hub before splitting it off but gave that to my daughter. Trying to get my cows back online, but this darn router won't cooperate. I'll look into the firmware update

After plugging and unplugging in different ports I get intermittent signal , blinking like, box pops up on the desk top saying its unplugged then plugged in , back and forth. Pretty sure its toasted. Tried different cables too.

Have you called your isp and told them that you have changed the hardware? If you change the hardware that the modem communicates with, generaly the isp has to release and reset the modem so it will work.

Look under your modem and write down the mac address, then call your isp and tell them what you installed and see if they can help. My cable company knew the model number of my router before I could even tell them, I guess they've seen a few!

By default the Linksys routers are set to function as a gateway instead of as a router. So if you want to use it downstream from another router that is already being used to host your internet connection (gateway), you will need to access the configuration utility (192.168.1.1) and change the router's working mode to "router". You might also want to press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds to make sure you clear the previous password. You can then use the default password "admin" (without quotes) to access the utility.

If I remember correctly the option to change this is under Dynamic Routing in the Advanced portion of the configuration utility for the router.

If you can't see the Linksys router from the network (try pinging 192.168.1.1) you may have to put it in place of the Netgear to be able to access the configuration utility in order to make the change. Of course, it may not be a bad idea to swap them anyway. At least you can then verify that the router is indeed working.

Well I tried resetting it, no go.The configuration utility page cannot be found. I might try another cable just in case but me thinks I'm spinning my wheels.

If the Diagnostic Red light/led is the only light you see when it is turned on and it stays on, I only have bad news for you.

I had the same problem all of a sudden with the same router, and it is dead.

You can try and send it to Linksys for them to fix it, but by time you pay for shipping there and back, you might as well have paid for a new one. $49.99 now
