FIREWALL RECOMMENDATIONs

Hi Folks .........Techimo to the rescue. I have finally got round to getting broadband installed and was wondering about firewalls etc. I was going to use Zonealarm but was told that as it is quite common, freeware and widely available that it is easily hacked. Can someone recommend a good firewall program with a mid-range Price tag?!!
I dont want to take any risks. Thanks Guys I would appreciate your feedback!!!

I'd recommend a hardware firewall as your first line of defense. It won't take up any resources on your PC, and it's not easily hacked.

I've got an SMC Barricade, and it seems to do the trick.

I would also suggest a hardware solution. I use the Linksys router w/ 4 port hub & VPN. They are easy to configure even for first timers. If you are looking for the free stuff, I would reccommend Kerio Personnel Firewall which you may download and use for free so long as you are using it for personnel use and not for businees/corporate use. ZoneAlarm has a huge security flaw open right now in the free version which ZoneLabs refuses to fix. I would not reccommend Zonealarm(free version) to anyone right now. I have used Kerio and it works nice with a slight firewall learning curve.

Sygate personal firewall

I ve been using that for awhile now with no problems. I bought zonealarm and after 2 months of usage it crashed all my internet browsers and i was forced to reinstall windows

A hardware solution would be way better though, thats what im working on getting

My Linksys cost $65 USD i believe. It's worth it IMO.

I use a linux distro called IPCop as a dedicated PC firewall/router. It's pretty bulletproof, and more customisable than a hardware router. Just need an old PC (486 or up) plus a few NIC's for it. Very easy to set up and admin. And it's free!

I also use Sygate Personal firewall on my main desktop to stop stuiff calling home in the event I accidentally load something nasty.

Cheers
Mick
