aol and cable modem problem
Ok, this is for customer who is currently USING AND WANTS TO KEEP AOL! (so please don't bash AOL here, just see if we can fix the prob)
-
Aol 8 installed on W98 SE, Dell Inspiron 3500 notebook, 128+ ram. 1Gb+ free hd space. Cable modem (Surfboard 4200 USB)
AOL causes bsod (don't have the error msg) when attempting to logon to AOL via cable modem.
However, using AOL 8 w/dialup modem WORKS FINE! No errors, connects to AOL get mail and browse 'net fine.
I can browse the 'net using IE outside of AOL just fine, using cable or dialup modem.
I uninstalled AOL 8 and reinstalled 7.0 (better for W98). Connected via cable modem and worked fine, no errors. Closed AOL--and AOL starts updating the installation, for which we 'will not be charged'. Uh oh.
Restart AOL: error message in ebrowser.dll. Search for ebrowser.dll on google, maybe get 9 hits when combined with AOL, seems to be a hijacker of some sort.
Question: wth is going on? how can I remove this ebrowser hijacker? and why does AOL 8 work fine with the dialup modem and NOT the cable modem?
