HIMEM.SYS ERROR ON BOOTUP

I am trying to fix on a dual boot win 98/XP machine and when I run scanreg I get an error that himem.sys is missing. Neither of the two operating system will boot up and not being a pc tech, I am a little confused. When I try to start either machine in normal mode, they both go through the screen stating the operating system and then they go to a black screen. Are there any ideas of what this could be, and possibly any fixes out there?

Thanks,
Brian

Which operating system are you running Scanreg on? XP or 98?

Himem.sys is something from the windows\system dir. I didn't know XP used it, but anyway.
Himem is a memory manager similar to emm386 to allow you to access extended memory (in machines with more than 1.1mb ram) just pull the file off some other win98 machine (it will fit on a floppy) and plop it into place on yours.
