Outdoors Messenger service, annoying popups

I keep getting these annoying popups, from a messenger service I did not know I had. I am using win xp pro and have the win messenger turned off. I use adaware to clear cookies and avg antivirus. My isp is juno, I've searched for any messenger service and have found none.
These popups happen anytime I am on the net and try to sell me services to block popups ! GRRRRR....
Any suggestions, much appreciated.

Yo alivin,

You've disabled "Messenger" service, right? (In WIN2K, you go to start/control panel/administrative tools/services and select disable).

Apart from that, sounds like you may have some kind of infection. It may be easier simply doing a low-level format/reinstall of your OS. You could spend days tracking this down, and still not correct the problem.

Some of this adware can be a real byatch to clean up!

Edit: The pop-up windows you speak of, are they just grey colored boxes with instructions telling you to copy the web address down BEFORE closing the box, or are they just normal pop-ups, like actual web pages, that you can click on and it directs you to another site?

Yup I had removed ms messenger from the add/remove progs & thought that was enough. After going to admin services it was there and working so I disabled it and we'll see if that works.
Thanks guys !
