non-atapi drive

I have a compaq dvd drive (5 of them) code DVD-113MC which is an older dvd drive (4x).
It shows up in the bios of my newer gigabyte motherboard as a "non-atapi" device and merely shows up as a tape drive in Windows XP, and does not register when I load a cd or DVD into it. What exactly is Non-atapi and does that mean I should through these dvd drives away???Thanks.

It basically means you need to install the proper drivers yourself for these drives.

Try DriverFiles.com or the manufactures web site. Hope theu are still in business...

One would think that the problem is drivers, but yet this dvd drive shows up and works fine in all of my older computers.
