XP Pro halts at splash screen

Hi all

This machine is acting quirky today. I can only get it to boot into safe mode. Is there anything in xp like SFC or a way to track what it's doing while starting up to see what's causing it to halt? Thanks in advance.

Have you tried going to the screen that lets you choose what mode to go into (VGA, Safe mode, etc) and selecting "Last known good configuration" ?

I had this problem on an old computer, no matter what the OS (2K, 98, Linux, XP was the only thing that worked and it was what I was trying to remove) it always froze at the splash for that OS. Obviously I couldn't try "last known config" because this was the first time booting it up with that OS. I eventually came to the conclusion via process of SafeMode + elimination that it was some sort of driver conflict or IRQ conflict (whatever an IRQ is)
However I would try the last known config thing since you had been running it before.

I have no idea what the problem was, but I finally had a chance to reinstall windows and it's all better I think it may have just been a corrupt file.
