PC2100 v. PC2700

I'm looking to buy a laptop...

Is there much difference between PC2100 266mhz DDR ram and PC2700 333mhz DDR ram?

What is the difference, if any?

well, it won't make a difference if your processor's FSB speed is SLOWER than your ram.
If you don't ever upgrade the processor, then whichever speed of ram matches your processor's FSB is fine.

By the way, what kind of system is it for?

My athlon xp1800 has a 266mhz FSB and I have PC2700 ram which is 333mhz, whereas the PC2100 is 266mhz.
So, technically I really don't need the PC2700. I just bought it to be upgrade safe.

I'm talking about a new end p4 with at least 500 mhz fsb, maybe even then new 8000 mhz fsb.

Will it make it that much faster having 333mhz or even 400mhz vs. 266 mhz?

oh!!! It will most definitely make a difference in this case!
If you've got the $$$ to spend on an 800 MHZ FSB Pentium, then it'd be best to get faster ram to go along with it.

Heck, manufacturers keep pumping out faster & faster memory, I don't know how fast you can get right now, but in your case, the faster the better.

If you buy an 800mhz FSB laptop...and correct me if I'm wrong here...but even PC2700 ISN'T enough for that as it's only 333mhz. You'll need PC3200 which is 400mhz...but I don't think that exists for a laptop, as I don't think the 800mhz FSB models are out yet either.

yeah, i don't know much about laptops...

I'm only into desktops.
And even MORE, I'm an AMD guy, not Intel.

But what is the fastest memory available? Isn't there any that can match the 800MHZ FSB speed of the latest P4?

I dont think there is 800mhz DDR yet, but you can run pc3200 dual for effective 800mhz, which is what intel is doing.

an 800mhz FSB uses a system bus of 200mhz...which is what PC3200 is

I know that. Its QDR. The idea is to keep up with the effective speed.
