sounds like you have a CD-ROM. who told you you have a DVD-ROM drive? Have you played DVD's on it before? What changed between then and now?

i used to be able to play dvds all the time.. then i jsut stopped using it becasue we got a dvd player.. now i have it in my room and want to watch some movies but the drive cant read the disks or soemthing. it says, "Can't find any cdrom/dvdrom devices"... on lucky tries it goes as far as the warnings that show on the beginning of dvds..

I dont know what to tell you. I've never heard of a DVD-ROM losing it's DVD-read capabilities. I would say someone switched your hardware without you knowing....heh. Maybe someone else can chime in here with better advice for you.

Can OSes forget about certain hardware? I would check the connections, maybe even unplug and replug the connections to be sure and check drivers and such.

good luck

It happens. DVD drives have twin lasers, one for DVD, the other for CD media. If one of them goes, reading the other type of media is still perfectly fine.

if i delete the former dvd drive in Device Manager and reboot, will the computer recognize it or is it gone forever?
