Systems Windows Media Player can't use Divx or Xvid

When I try to open any .avi file encoded with Divx or Xvid, Windows Media Player (version 9) is unable to play it. It will search for the codec then say it can't find the codec then won't play the file. I can take that exact same file and open it with Winamp or BSPlayer (comes with K-Lite codec pack) and it will open with no problem at all.

Does anybody how I can fix this? Is there a simple solution or do I have to dive into the registry and what not?

I had the same problems and decided to go back to version 8 I think it is and I have no problems watching anything. It's just one more example of M$ trying to fix everything plus I think someone said it had spyware bundled in with it. Hope that helped

I forgot to say my OS, I'm on Win2k Pro.

I still have the old media player installed, it's like version 6 I think. Divx and Xvid do not work with version 6 either. I actually reinstalled Windows trying to fix this and that did absolutely nothing.

My DivX files play just fine in WMP 6.4 on Win2k. I just had to make the file association. I'm using DivX 5.0.5 (non-Pro). I also installed WMP 7.1, WMP 8 codecs, and WM Encoder 9, all for the sake of codecs, but they shouldn't really make a difference, except maybe having the MPEG-4 codec may help.

When tried to install WMP9 it fried my 2000 kernel and I couldn't recover it. I had to do a fresh install. Later I found out the there was a compatibility issue between it and Direct CD.

None of those solutions worked. WMP still don't work.
