A router can be disconnected from the internet, just the same way a modem could be.
In my experience, you will soo no slowdown (other than when multiple users are sharing the connection)
Routers are configurable to varying degrees, but all major settings are available.

Yes, that or disconnect the ethernet. Or it could have a problem causing disconnects.

Most can be configured through some kind of web control panel, and can be turned off through that, as well as by disconnecting the power or cable/phone cord.
My cable modem has an off switch as well.
Cheers

1) Sure you can unplug. I use an OpenBSD box as a router so I can just drop the external interface.
2) Certainly if the router is applying any kind of traffic shaping. Otherwise I would think you would be unlikely to see a drop in performance unless you really hammer the router.
3) Yep but with varying levels of flexibility. If its a cheap hardware router your options will be fairly limited (usually some kind of web interface). If its a more upmarket model or a software based solution (linux box etc) then you should get a much finer level of control.
Regards
eddy
