Better of the two?

My friend wants to pick between the following two video cards to run with linux as the os.. and they are..

the geforce 4 ti4800 or a the geforce fx 5200 ultra

which should he pick and why? or is there a better card out there for around the same price?

Thanks in advance.

Todd

The Geforce4 4800 is far better than the 5200 Ultra.

Though the first one is a Dx8.0, compatible with DX9 but still old generation.

The 5200 Ultra is a DX9 although is nothing compared to the 4800.

If you have to run in on linux....I don`t have any idea what you should pick

yeah...for linux it doesn't really matter, they are both going to use the same driver anyways

Ti4800 is better than the FX5200

BUT

Save money and get a Ti4600 which has the same clock speed as the Ti4800 and faster then the Ti4800SE

View a post by prexaspres that shows you the specs for the cards.

It seems that the Ti4800 was released as a marketing ploy to get 8XAGP cards out in the market, when nothing uses 8XAGP.
But you can buy a Ti4600 128mb with 8XAGP.

If he's running Linux, will he be playing games?
If not, grab the 5200 ultra, as it should be available at a lower price than the 4800. Or indeed, just get a straight 5200. If he's a game player then get the 5200 on a budget and the 4800 if he can afford it. the 4800 is going to do almost everything better except maybe anisotropic filtering or DX9 stuff and even then it will be a toss-up.

Look here for a benchmark comparison http://www4.tomshardware.com/graphic...311/index.html
