ICS question (connection sharing)

Ok, I am sure I should already know this sort of thing, but....

When using Internet connection sharing....you have one computer hooked to the phone lines....how does the other computer hook to THAT computer.

Although in typing the question out I guess I realized the answer.

Since the ICS comp acts as a sort of DHCP server then of course it has to be connected thru nics and cat5, correct?

The setup in question is an XP Dell dimension 2300 which I just sold..the dude asked about ICS..he has some W95 comps.

So basically if he has a Xover cable and a nic in the w95 comp he is in business yes? Is ICS in XP Home pretty straightforward?

Rather primitive questions I know, but for my 2000th post I couldnt come up with anything better so....

Thanks, JP

LOL, JP!

Only questions that are dumb are unasked ones, you know that!

Yes, he can connect 2 PC's with just a crossover cable and 2 NIC's.

But if he has more than 2 PC's he will need at least a hub, and then use straight-through cables to patch each PC to the hub.

ICS will work with a number of machines (not sure of the limit - might be 254? ).

BTW, I'd suggest AnalogX Proxy rather than win ICS. More robust, less prone to problems.

Cheers
Mick

Hmm, I am browsing a few sites and notice that Msoft is listing ICS with W98se and above, with no mention of W95....is that just because they quit supporting ICS?

Really, does the second machine even know its part of ICS or does it just know it is getting an IP thru a lan conenction of some sort?

To rephrase that I guess I could ask...does the 'client" machine need software (protocol etc) or just the ICS machine??

win95 does not do ICS only 98 and above

basically the ICS machine is acting like a router. it gives the second machine and ip address. and no the clinet does not need extra software to use the ICS machine connection

If you use AnalogX Proxy, win95 will work fine. You only need the Proxy on one PC - the rest join though the gateway it creates by putting the proxy server address in the brower or other software.

You can get win95 to work as a client with winXP ICS, but it's a bit fiddly.
