Outdoors New Cable Set UP AAAHHHHH!

I just had comcast cable connected to my home. Comcast will only connect to the modem. You are responsible for setting up your PC. This is where the problem starts. I have three computers. All are 233MHz. Yes, I know I need a new computer. In the mean time I still want to use my old computer, but comcast's set up software knocks me out after testing for minimum requirements indicating that my computer must be at least 300MHz.

My question is, is there a way to set up the network connection without using their setup disk? A friend at work said that there should be a way to do this but I am going to need help doing it. Can anyone help?

SI

You shouldn't really need a setup disk...all it will do is setup all the settings.

You might want to consider getting a router, as it will be the easiest and safest way for you to setup and share your internet between all computers

I bought a Linksys router with four ports. If I connect the router to the modem will I automatically be connected or do I need some sort of activation account number, like comcast is telling me?

I really have no idea what I am doing.

If it's anything like my cable provider...all you'll have to do is plug the modem into the Uplink port (or the first port), plug the other systems in, and run the Connection Setup Wizard to make the systems connect through the LAN (Internet Properties -> Connections tab)

Send a message via AIM to Siliconjunkie
and possibly power cycle the cable modem

It will also probably give you a setup page when you first try to connect...it'll just ask you to click a link, then agree to a list of terms

I just got something like that from Adelphia cable today.

Their stupid software can't detect my NIC.

Thank a lot, all of you. I'll give these suggestions a try and see what happens.
