Modem struck by lightening
I searched the site for "lightening," but didn't find my particular problem, so I'm going to start a new thread.
I think I already know the answer to this, but...
Saturday night, a lightening strike killed the power (for a second, or two, only) in my house, while my computer was on. Now the modem reads "No dial tone detected." on dial attempts. I know the phone jack and cord are good, because I've tested them with a phone. Win XP Pro tells me that the "device is working properly," and there are no resource conflicts, whatsever. All diagnostics run on the modem say it's fine, but it can't find a dial tone (only problem).
Now, I've seen lightening do some strange things to electronic equipment, but this is the first time I've seen this. Everything appears to be fine according to Win XP Pro, and I know that I can get a dial tone thru the cord and jack.
My guess is that the modem is toast, and I need to get a new one, but I was just wondering if anyone else has ever seen this?
Thanks!

Welcome to techimo!
I have had that happen before I got DSL, As Ben said its toast. With 56k's going for 15-20 $ each unless your broke you should be able to replace it pretty easy.
Maybe someone here has a modem to spare??? Guys? Anyone?

Isn't there a option in XP to stop the modem looking for a dial tone first ?????
This may allow you to keep on spodding without having to shell out any cash worth a try hey |

Westy, that dial tone thing doesn't work. I've tried it, but the lightning just fried the entire modem.

I think the first problem is the spelling. Its spelled "lightning". Second I think I've had the same problem as you had. My modem couldn't "hang up". So as soon as my computer was on, it was like the modem was off the hook. Then you know what happens if you leave a phone off the hook, it makes that loud annoying sound. What I had to do was unplug the modem, and then plug it in right before I was going to dial out.

Thanks for all the posts, guys. (Sorry, I typed in a hurry and have never been one to do a spell check on a forum post.("lightening"))
I figured it was dead, so I've gone ahead and ordered a Lucent DSP modem that I found for $13 + shipping (I will never use another HSP modem, again!).
THANKS!
