WIN 98 Networking Problem

This weekend I had to swap out a failing MB in the kid's computer. I'm trying to get it going without doing a reformat/reinstall (so I don't have to reinstall about a million games that he plays)

The MB swap went from an old KT133A based board to a Leadtek Winfast 7350 KDA (SIS 735 based) board.

I have everything working properly, except for networking. I removed all the old stuff from device manager in safe mode, then installed the drivers for the onboard Realtek NIC chip. I couldn't get it to work, and had problems with hanging on shutdown, hanging on startup, etc. I then disabled the onboard NIC and went back to my trusty Intel PCI NIC - but had the same problem. (The Intel NIC worked fine with the old MB, and the computer works fine as long as the network stuff is disabled or not installed)

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Windows network protocols, but that didn't help either.

Any other suggestions I can try to get this thing working before I give up and reformat??

Have you checked for updated drivers?

Seems like I got it fixed - although I'm still not sure what the problem was. I unplugged/replugged the cables, and uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers and network protocols one more time and all of a sudden it works

Oh well - hopefully it stays working. (I can't stand the whining when the kid's computer isn't working and he can't play any games)

It's amazing how many times that seems to fix the problem. Just checking the connections or unplug and plug it back in.

I was having video problems earlier...had all the symptoms of a ram chip on my video card going bad. Someone suggested that I just pull out the card and reseat it. So I did...and the problem was gone!

Can you explain it? No...but it seems to work sometimes. lol.
