Video and Audio Out of Sync

I have a AVI file encoded with DIVX where the video and audio is out of sync. It gets progressively worse as the file is played. My computer has no problems with other files of the same type.

What can I do about this?

Thanks

Sometimes those bootleg movies just aren't very good quality.

It's a TV episode in a series that my friend let me borrow to watch. This is the only one out of several that I have borrwed with this problem. He encoded all of these himself.

Its an encoding issue. You may be able to fix somewhat by splitting the soundtrack out and adding some space/time here and there, but overall its not worth it and still wont be perfect.

Just pretend its kung-fu

Hmm, I see...

How would I go about doing that?

It's so bad that the sound would start playing almost a full minute before the open credits finish.

Split the audio and video with something like virtual dub, then you can manipulate the .wav file. Once you get that done re-encode it. But, you will probably never get it even close.

Well, the only thing you could feasibly do is try to figure out how much the sound and video are out of sync after a certain amount of time into the movie. Then you will able to calculate approximately what the frame rate of the audio is vs. the frame rate of the video. Normally this out of sync is due to a careless setting or not enough processing power to encode the video from a live stream, either the audio or video seems to fall behind.

Ne ways, now that you know what the difference in frame rate is, you would be able to adjust the audio frame rate to make it inline with the video using a program such as virtual dub.

As you can see this is a fairly involved task and all in all, not worth the effort

Thanks

I figured it wouldn't be easy. I'll put this aside as something to do when I'm bored one day.
