Roadrunner Users

I went and got info from my cable company sat. about roadrunner. They just gave me a stinking brochure. I was reading through the info and I noticed this
----------------------------
Service: 44.95
Additional Residential IP: 5.95
Self-Installation: 49.95
_________________
The service is about what I expected but whats the deal with the other 2 if I network this stuff myself will it work? Will they charge me extra? and whats with the selfinstallation? is that assuming you have no NICs? will I have to pay the 49.95 if I go buy my own cable modem and connect it here by myself? If I did that could I just sign up for Roadrunner from there website and be done with it?...................As you can see I've got alot of questions about this I dont want to spend an arm and a leg for something I could do myself. Guys please help me out.

I know if you have a router you dont need the second IP as far as the installation price that is nuts Comcast around here is giving free installation plus 2 months free service. Call them and tell them dsl service is giving out free installation and ask them to match it. Good luck.

service fee is fine
Additional res IP is not necessary. Buy a router, have as many PC's as you want with private IP's and only one public IP from RR.
Self-Installation fee, but no service guy fee?! Odd.. seems like it woudl be the other way around...
for cox it was free installation for the guy to come out and do it

I would do that except the only broadband arround here is roadrunner so they would probably call my bluff. i think that the installation is for the NIC card and the modem and the cable. The site said i need a 10baseT card is that the same as a 10/100 card? Dont mean to sound like a chimp but this is gonna be some of the first networking I do and I want to make sure its right.

If you use your own modem, you won't have to pay the rental fee for the modem, but if anything happens to it you have to pay for it. While I was a RR customer over the last year, I had my modem replaces 3 times.
You can network two or more systems. They do not care. The customer support will ask you to hook up to only one system if you ever call them with a problem, but they do not check, nor do the installation guys care.
Ask them if they have any specials. If they say they do not have any, what they mean is that they are not going to tell you over the phone. They always have specials, but it is up to you to hear them and ask for them. If you haven't heard any, tell them you might have heard of one where you get free installation. It has worked several times for me, because it is a common special they run.
Comcast gave me a NIC. RR did not. You might have to buy a $15 NIC from Best Buy.

Nope, a NIC is a NIC is a NIC. Any of them will work w/ RR, regardless if it is a 10 or a 10/100.

I didn't have a self-installation fee when I set my RR up. I hooked it up myself and had the special w/ free installation. I don't understand why there'd be a fee for self-installation unless you are paying for the self-installation kit, which is useless software, the modem and possibly a NIC. I can't remeber about the last part.

I would call and ask about the fees. Doesn't hurt to ask. Pays to smart shop.
