Seems Slow.

I've got MDK9.1 Installed and everything is working as near as I can tell. It seems very slow to me for some reason. Mozilla takes 10sec to load, and Evolution takes about 30sec to load. The whole thing seems slow like that. What can I check or change, or is this the way Linux is? It's about the same as running Knoppix off CD.
Specs:
AMD XP 1700
MSI k7t turbo 2
768 PC133
60 Gig ATA133 Maxtor 7200 RPM
GeForce 4 MX 440
The HD it's installed on is a slave.

I have always felt this too. From the console its plenty quick. But anything graphical brings it to its knees. I'm sure if you tweak the X config and your video drivers you could improve it. But I am definitely not the one to help you with that.

Hmmm, well if you're running the KDE desktop environment, those are both GTK-based apps and would have to load a lot of extra libraries. Try loading up Konqueror and Kmail and I bet they'd go pretty snappy.

In other words: it's a feature not a bug . You're probably using up a lot less memory keeping fewer libraries loaded at once, but when you load these apps, it's loading the libraries at the same time. With KDE-based apps on a KDE system, most of the QT are already running.

Just a question, how long did it take to install linux, 45 minutes or about 1.5 hours+? And does browsing with Knoquerer take an insanely long time to do?

Edit: Mozilla ALWAYS takes a bit to load. It's the inherit design (flaws). But evolution? That's a little long.

Okay, you may want to try this:
http://en.tldp.org/LDP/solrhe/Securi...hap6sec74.html

Not sure if it will work or not, but if your drive isn't using DMA, you will see a major performance hit.

Umm I've been running Linux for more than 4 years now and the only time it "looked" pretty slow was with my old PII 333. I've really never had any loading times like the ones you suggested darrelld. The only progs that seem to take some time to load are Java based like Limewire for example, other than that everything seems pretty fast to me.

Could be worth checking that dma support isn't broken or turned off and that you aren't running every network service under the sun (quite likely if its a default mandrake install). I have a similar spec system to you running debian and it doesn't have any performance issues.

Regards
