New computer help

A few months ago I gave my brother some old parts to build a computer, and he bought the other parts he needed. once i got back from school i tried looking at his computer to see why it would not work. i remember the computer starting up but not recognizing the hard drive.

I know i'm being really vague, but my brother is going to call me tomorrow night with exactly what the screen says. as always your help is much appreciated.

Most likely first thought is that he hasn't set the jumpers for master/slave right, or that he hasn't reset the BIOS to that particular HDD.

Let us know exact messages he gets, and it'll probably be a very simple fix (hopefully! ).

Cheers
Mick

Well I just got my hands on the computer again. I got the computer to recognize the hard drive (switched it to cable select), and the CD-Rom (switched its jumper to master).

when I start the computer it does the standard detections. But when the bios screen comes on it shows a message box that says "The System intruded, chassis opened or tempered before. Please check the system." what does this mean???

chassis hum?

I know some boards have a jumper to detect some kind of chassis intrusion then report it.
Find the owners handbook, look and see if this is the case.
you may just have to close the contacts with a jumper or move it over to turn this feature off?
Just some thoughts
good luck

Try resetting the BIOS... See if that helps at all.

yep, it should be an option in the bios to disable/enable intrusion detection.. I had an old dell optiplex g100 err maybe gx, but it had that same feature, set off just by opening the side of the case.

I fixed that error by closing the case (you know, the intrusion is that some panels are taken off )

hmmmmm... could the problem be that he brought the computer over to my house without any of the sides?? (open on both sides). From what you're telling me I think it is. well, in that case I'm going to have to wait until the weekend to see if putting the sides back on is the answer.

That is the answer, but there should be an option in bios to disable the intrusion detection. Can you get to the bios wihtout the covers?
