Actually, with WineX, you can play many popular Windows games, plus many developers are offering Linux ports of their game enginges. It really depends upon what games you want to play. Check this out:

Why dont you put Windows on one partition and Linux on other and have the bet of best worlds?

Manadrake 9 is the most likely the easiest Linux to install.

The 2 free FPSs out right now, Americas Army and RTCW:Enemy Territory both have free linux ports out as well. Other than that, other ports are avaliable, but cost $$$ (except for Unreal Tournament, for which the port is free of charge).

If not that, then WineX has fairly good support, and http://www.icculus.org/ has some free (abiet non-official) ports and links to more.

As for a beginer's Linux page, well...there are many fourms on TIMO about them. www.linuxjunior.com is a good place to start.

Oh, and you need to have a distro of Linux in mind. Here is a list for you to help decide from (all avaliable from www.linuxiso.org ):

Mandrake - Highly reccomended for newbies. GREAT configuration programs, and console support.

Red Hat - Good installer, but not a good place to start with Linux.

SuSE - You have to pay (or dl it the hard way), but it's a solid distro and some say it's better than Mandrake (I like drake better tho).

Slackware - Advanced distro that can be quite a pain. However, if you want to accelerate your learning of Linux, go here. I reccomend sticking with Drake or SuSE for a while, to get comfortable, then going here. Once you get the hang of it, it's a peice of cake!

Debian - Distro that is incredibly easy to maintain (thanks to APT, the best d### package manager EVER!), but hard to install (thanks to dselect, and tasksel doesn't work worth a ####). Install this only after you are well experienced. You'll need about 30 mins-2 hours to install, and I'd get the unstable version instead of the stable or testing version.

Connectiva - Designed for Portugese, but can be changed easily. Comes with APT, but uses RPMs instead of DEB packages (like Debian). Takes a whooping 4 CDs (but RedHat takes 6, I think...), but is easy to install and maintain. I still reccomend Drake, Slack, or Debian tho.

No, adding Linux will not interfere at all with your gaming.

Replacing your current installation with Linux will.

There are, however, quite a few good games availible for Linux, you just have to look sometimes.

Red I ke the description of Slackware.

I grew up on Slackware (literally, since v3.x), but I'm rapidly becoming too lazy to bother with the more advanced versions of Linux anymore. I install Mandrake these days, as its configuration is almost a point and click operation for most systems.

Doesn't running an emulator like WineX defeat the whole purpose of running Linux? I mean Windows runs slow compared to Linux cause its running on top of DOS, right (plz correct me if I'm wrong here)? So running WineX on top of Linux, no matter the version or make, will be act similiar to Windows speed wise. Plus you are going to have to deal with the bugs that crop up due to imperfect porting.

So I would have to agree with TechPusher, make a partition of Windows for gaming and the such and make a partition of Linux for all your, well, Linux needs.

Nope, Windows no longer "runs atop DOS." Actually, even Win9x does not run atop DOS. WinNT/2K/XP runs a 32-bit pre-emptive multitasking kernel atop a hardware abstraction layer.

WineX provides the ability to game and run popular Windows applications directly within Windows. It is a popular choice for cross development work, though real professionals opt for VMware or similar to run a virtual machine, thus allowing access not only to Windows, but all its wonderful errors for those interested in programming. The Wine development team has to work hard not only to program WinAPI calls, but to copy all Win errors as well.

And yes, WineX can be anywhere from very-slightly faster to VERY slow. Depends on the app. Ex. Max Payne runs well, and Half-Life runs okay (menu is messed up), but some other games won't run at all.
