Unable to play some Avi's

I am unable to play some avi's with windows media player.
Anyone know of a good freeware program that will play avi's as well as other formats?

The K-lite pack is good, but you might also want to get the latest Xvid codec, as most new encoded video is in the xvid format.
Getting a different player won't help much, unless that player comes with the necessary codec.

Don't get anything with Kazaa in it's name...go to the first link brainchild gave...that will list every codec you will ever need to play any video.

I've had the same problems (and am still having them)...for instance, all I get with the attached file is audio and the WMP visualizations.

I downloaded the latest DivX codecs already, so I'm not sure what I'm missing now.

Are you guys all pretty much using DirectX 9.0a now or what? I'm still on 8.1.

If they're on a cd, and the cdrw didn't burn them right, they may have gotten messed up.
