apache confuses me...

hey yall. i just installed apache 2.0 on my pc because i dont want to have to pay money for my files to be hosted. so i get it installed and i guess everything is working because it gave no error messages. but what do i do now? how do i access my files from outside? do i type http://my.ip.address.here/my_file.html ? if i am behind a router will that complicate things? any and all help you can give me is appreciated.

another question, i know ill prolly have to pay for a domain name and all, but is it easy to set up that to point to my server? say i buy www.iwantthisone.com, do i just point that to my ip address or what?

thanks a lot!

drew

Yeah, being behind a router will complicate things, but only slightly.

What you will want to do is set your router's port forwarding up.
Have it forward port 80 to port 80 on your internal IP address. (This is assuming you are using internal IP addresses on your LAN - If not, please let me know)

As for your domain, it's pretty simple, assuming you are going to use a free DNS service out there on the Net.
Just have it point the primary A record to your IP address (The external IP address assigned by your ISP), and also create a 'www' alias with an A record to point to the same place.

Look for the file httpd.conf in one of the apache folders... I think it's named something like conf or config.

Just change the root directory to whatever directory you want to store your html files in. Remember that there are 2 places where you change root directory
