Zone Alarm

I have a quick question about Routers and Firewalls.

Since I moved to Maine I have started using DSL thru a DLink DI604 firewalled router to all of my machines.

And the question is..........Can I get rid of ZoneAlarm Pro?

I think you should keep it.

you have control over which applications access the internet etc.

very helpfull.

You don't need it...like Droppyale said you can conrol internet access with it, but that's about it's only use now.

Disagree with you, Telexen. ZoneAlarm monitors the programs that can access the Internet without you being aware of it. This is very important if you have a virus that does mass mailings or helps a master in it's DoS efforts. The Pro version also will quarantine e-mail attachments so that you don't inadvertently open something harmful or malicious. A router can't do that.

also if you set your computer in DMZ under the router, you should keep ZA.

A router is a simple packet filter and is easy to get around. The packet filter does not protect against trojans or outgoing applications, like ZA. Under no circumstances would I get rid of the software firewall, as you will be much more vulnerable without it. Either run it, or Sygate firewall, or some sort of firewall that has a DMZ. There was a Linux firewall that was tiny and worked great, if you have an extra box laying around that could work as a firewall/DMZ system. I just can't remember the name. Regardless, do not get rid of the ZA or Sygate if you are worried about privacy and the integrity of your machine, since your packet filter in your router is minimal protection.

Ok I have another question about ZoneAlarm..................

I installed ZoneAlarm and everything was just great for a couple of hours or so. I sat down at the computer and went to go online and check out the forums, Nada.............

My connection was still active but ZoneAlarm was blocking me from getting online............

I shut down ZoneAlarm and presto chango I can go online again.

I read some of the instructions for ZoneAlarm and tried a few things without success.

If I were to try all of the related instructions the odds are I would prolly be in my dirt bed before I got it figured out.

So, With that in mind I thought I would see if anyone here has run into the particular problem before.......

If so your help would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't used Zone Alarm for a couple years so it may have changed since I touched it last but it used to have a locking feature built into it that would be activated when the screensaver kicked in. So if I had to guess I'd say you either denied Internet Explorer (or whatever browser you're running) permissions to exit the firewall or the lock might be stuck (which I've personally never seen before so I'd say it's a lot more likely to be a problem with permissions than program error).

You also might want to try Sygate. You can get it here:
