First of check to make sure that your BIOS is properly seeing the DVD drive.
Also some DVD drives if they are connected with another optical drive on the same IDE channel, have to be slave, or was it master, no it was slave.
Forgive me I just woke up
Anyway after you know your BIOS sees it, make sure Win sees the drive, if it does and you still cannot get Power DVD to see it, well I would then reinstall the program from the DVD drive.
Can't think of anything else at the moment, brain still too foggy.

north,
Welcome to TechIMO! You've come to the right palce for help. You may want to review the forum rules and be advised that using all caps in a post is considered rude. If you really want help it's not polite to yell at a person trying to help.
That said, how long has the drive been in your system? Has it ever worked before? Do you have the jumper set right and do you have it on the corresponding drive cable plug? More than likely if it doesn't show up on the BIOS boot screen as Mr Purple suggested then it's either not jumperd or plugged correctly(including the possibility of a bad cable) and/or you may have to manually run the detection utility within the BIOS. Also, Mr Purple was trying to explain that if the BIOS does indeed detect the drive is Windows detecting it as well? Is it listed in Device Manager? Please advise.

regarding my dvd problem,i have checked my device manager and the power dvd drives are no longer showing.

i have no idea how to run the detection utility in the

all i know is that the pc tells me i already have a version of power dvd installed but i cant find it.

when i go program.. power dvd.. ,i get the message the drive or network that the shortcut refers to is unavailable, make sure the network resource is avialable

what kind of dvd drive and graphics card do u have?
did it work before u updated powerdvd?
is there any other way to watch dvds on ur comp or is power dvd the only one that works?
does mediaplayer show a scramble picture when playing dvds? cuz thats what i get so i have to use power dvd or the player software that comes with the dvd.

When your computer(?) first boots up there should be a black screen with text listing the drives that the BIOS detects. Is the DVD listed? We need more history/info on the computer. While in the very first boot screen there should be a prompt at the bottom of the screen telling you how to get to the CMOS/BIOS setup utility usually by depressing 'DEL' or 'F1'. We need to know what kind of computer it is before we can help and please be specific.
