C-Media Soundcard install troubles

hi

i got my new pc working but am having trouble installing the drivers for the sound card - while installing it says 'waiting for audio driver to be ready' and it stays on that without progressing.

the card is either cmi8330, cmi8338, cmi8738 - i am not sure because th cd that came with the pc has a sound folder with the 3 folders - i assume its the cmi8738 as it is the only one with winxp drivers but i am not sure - is there a way to find out what card it is without opening the pc (also i think the soundcard is built into the motherboard (asus p4s8x))

thnx
matt

Is the speaker socket next to the serial/parallel ports (on the backplate) or is it on a card facing the other way (like the grey spacers you can see on the back)
Just put the cd in and let XP find the drivers itself. If it hasn't already installed some, check device manager (Control panel->system->hardware->device manager) and note any devices with yellow exclamation marks or red crosses next to them. Post back here.
Also, if you are running the setup program and it is failing, check the motherboard manual for the chip, or asus' website if you don't want to look inside.
What sort of problems have you been having?

i checked on back of pc and the card is is not in a pci slot but in the block with the other stuff (ie mouse, keyboard input)

i tried to install with the add new hardware feature but it seems that it cant find a driver for it - and i have also tried it again with the drivers that came with pc but still get the same error

What about device manager? what does that show?
Have you already installed a driver? That may have messed it up if it was the wrong one.

If it's integrated in the motherboard, the manual for the motherboard has a specs list that should include what sound 'card' they use.
