Hmm...you may need more than $350 to get everything. You can do it, but you may have to make sacrifices in some areas.

Since Nforce2 baords are mostly reference designs, any brand name should do. The cheapest on Newegg is a CHAINTECH for $69. I've never heard of them, so the next up is a mean looking shuttle, for $70.

Cheapest drive on Newegg is $50, for a seagate 30GB 7200rpm drive. If you want rebates, Best Buy usually has some good ones going on, but for their larger-capacity drives. You may get lucky tho.

BEst overclockable AMD chip is the XP 1700+. Mine overclocks to 1.2GHz without one degree (C) more in temprature. However, I'm running a stock HS so it runs pretty hot (125F, or 49C). I'll need to change that soon... According to Scott and Rob in Maximum PC, the 2100+ is a good overclocker.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON THE PSU!!! With advanced chips and ultra-powerful technology, a good PSU is a must. Cheap, generic PSUs will not cut it, and, according to Tom's Hardware, can be a fire hazard. Since the PSU you are looking at is reccomended by Omar, it should get points, but don't stop there. Scour the web for all info on the hard drive you can find, including it's strengths and weaknesses, complaint's people have had, and comprehensive reviews.

I posted the HDD deal while you were typing, I suppose, sorry 'bout that, so now I only need a board, case and chip for around $300, any board with nforce will do then? I saw an asus for around $75, I've done a few intel builds with asus bnoards, they worked well.
Still taking suggestions...

RedWolf, I also assume you meant the 1700 is running at 2.1 instead of 1.2 GHz What's that equal, around a 2500?

No, that was no typo. What I'm saying is that if I wasn't using the d### stock HS, I could push it MUCH higher. It went up without any temprature increase what-so-ever on the stock HS (which is quite nice). On something more, umm...powerful, I could get it to 2.1. But I'm broke, and have no powerful HS .

Asus is a good company, and $75 for an ASUS is a great deal. The Nforces really don't vary much unless it's for extra features like on-board sound, bluetooth, etc. An Nforce 2 is a great overcloker too. But be warned. I have heard issues with the on-board IDE (all though that appears to be a rare problem). Be careful, and save the receipts (but you know that of course). Since ASUS is a larger mobo company, you'll get some nice 'perks' with it.

I see. Sorry about the HS problem. The best is the thoroughbed B revision, right? The 1700(b) is $48, the 2100(B) is 69.00, anyone have a link telling the differences in somewhat simple terms?
Thanks again!

Maximum PC explained the differences between A and B (if that's what you're asking). Basically, they added another layer to the processor. A processor is made up of 'layers' of silicon chips, and the B has one more layer than the A. Much better for OCing.

Okay, B it is, however, the 1700 and 2100 only run @ 266 FSB, is this gonna be a big issue?
I've chosen an MSI board (for the color, is that lame or what?) I have about $130 left(might HAVE to go w/ the 1700 )

JP, I like the last one, but not the spider window, I mean, I do, just not for this application... Anything similar w/ just a squuar window or no window would be fine too. I've asked before, do you just attach a window w/ rivets when you do it yourself, or what?
Thanks!
