Migrating Outlook 2000 Files to New computer

Can anyone help me migrate my Adress book and saved email messages from my old laptop to my new one? Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2000. I need specifics! Thanks!

The easiest way I have found is to do an export and import.

Goto file, choose import/export, export to a .pst and follow the directions. Once you have it exported, just import it on the new one.

Big problem is that you can end up with a pretty big file, so if you dont have a CD-RW or network it can be a pain. Last time I did mine it was about 300 megs. It also doesnt save your settings, rules and such.

Hey S. J. , I tried that, but as I saw it, I could only import a .pst from Outlook Express, Eudora etc., but NOT outlook itself. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Here is how I do it. Outlook stores all that in a *.pst file, if you didn't rename it it is outlook.pst. I can't tell you where it is, because you didn't mention the Operating System. The easiest way to find it is to do a file search for *.pst. Just backup this file.

On the new computer install and run Outlook, then replace the outlook.pst it creates with the one you backed up.
When you start Outlook again after this you will get a message about outlook bar shortcut, just click yes and continue, it will only happen once.

There are other method to achieve this, but I find this one the easiest for me. Someone will post alternatives, I'm sure.

My method leaves rules intact. But add-ins are contained in another file called extend.dat but replacing that may cause problems if your add-ins are located in a different location on the new laptop.

You can import a Outlook .pst Did it yesterday, maybe the wording is bad. Darrells method will work as well, the file is hidden by default and about 393439 levels deep in your profile, at least in XP.

This is something MS needs to address. Kinda like the Files and Settings Trasnfer Wizard. An Outlook backup wizard.

edit: Ohhhh Darrell, you are my new best friend. I always hated that. Don't use add-ins so I'm not worried about that. I will have to try it that way next time.

Hi Darrell, how do I replace the new .pst file with the "old" Outlook .pst file?

Many thanks!

With Outlook not running, just drag the old one into the folder that contains the new one. If they both have the same name Windows will ask if you want to replace it, you do. Is your old one named outlook.pst?
