I built my PC. Overbuilt probaly but everyone already told me that.

ATI Radeon 9800
Win XP Pro


Seems to be OK except Direct X. What's happening is that Version 9.0 is being detected by the DXDia so that is what I'm assuming came with the Win XP. But, when I run the PC Check on ATI's multimedia center configuration, it's saying 8.1 0r greater not detected. I also tried to install a program of mine. It said the same thing, then it proceeded to install 8.1 off the disk. Of course 8.1 will not overwrite 9.0 so viscious circle. Do I have to re-install windows leaving out Direct X 9.0? I know there is a 9.0a on MSN. Will that help? Any ideas would be mucho appreciated.

Huh? Windows XP has DirectX 8.1 built in natively...it's a simple Windows Update patch to get to 9.0a

Maybe it's the Radeon. I think those ship with DX9 now. Maybe you accidently installed it when you were installing the ATI drivers.

It's very possible that the Radeon had the 9.0,and I probably did install it. But that is what confuses me about itselef saying 8.1 or greater not detected.

XP comes with 8.1? OK I am learning a bit here.

System restore, maybe?

Did you install Direct X 9 at all? or did some other (ATi) installation do it?

It must have been in the ATI installation.
